Taylor of Crosslake, Man., becomes first Canadian woman to medal in Paralympic triathlon

Team Canada collected 3 triathlon medals on the 4th day of competition at the Tokyo Paralympics, including a bronze for Jessica Tuomela in the women's PT4 and 2 silvers: one for Stefan Daniel in the men's PTS5 and a landmark medal for Kamylle Frenette in the women's PTVI.

Tuomela, a former Para nordic skier, earned bronze with a time of 1:13:24. The 27-year-old from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., made the switch to the multi-sport 3 years ago and finished 7th at last year's world championships.

Frenette, a 28-year-old from Dieppe, N.B., became the first Canadian to win a Paralympic medal in the women's triathlon PTVI by capturing silver with guide Johnathan Godbout. The pair crossed the finish line in 1:13:44, less than one minute behind the gold medallist.

30-year-old Stefan Daniel from Calgary, Alta., clinched silver in the men's PTS5 in a time of 1:02:27. Daniel, a former soldier, lost his right leg above the knee in 2009 while serving in Afghanistan. He won bronze at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio and has since won multiple medals at the world championships.

Canada now has 17 medals at the Tokyo Paralympics - 4 gold, 2 silver, and 11 bronze. The country ranks 11th overall.
