Germany Thrash Scotland 5 1 In Euro 2024 Opener

Germany thrash Scotland 5-1 in Euro 2024 opener

Host nation run riot in Munich as Clarke's men suffer nightmare start

Scotland wilted in the face of a scorching Germany performance as Steve Clarke's 10-man side opened their Euro 2024 campaign with a humiliating 5-1 defeat in Munich.

The hosts took the lead after just seven minutes through Timo Werner, and doubled their advantage 10 minutes later when Kai Havertz headed home. Scotland's task was made even harder when Nathan Patterson was sent off for a second yellow card just before the half-hour mark.

Germany took full advantage of their numerical superiority, with Serge Gnabry making it 3-0 just before the break. Ilkay Gundogan added a fourth from the penalty spot early in the second half, and Leroy Sane completed the rout with a fine solo effort late on.

It was a nightmare start for Clarke's men, who had been hoping to make a positive start to their first major tournament since 1998. Instead, they were outplayed and outclassed by a rampant Germany side.

The defeat leaves Scotland bottom of Group F after the opening round of matches. They will need to improve significantly if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
